Taste of Wolcott Offers Inexpensive Dates

You don’t have to leave town to get an upscale delicious meal on a nice date. And pizza doesn’t have to be the only option. In fact, chefs offering a variety of familiar and unique options are just around the corner for dates that won’t cost a hundred bucks.

Throughout the month of June, five Wolcott establishments have continued their Taste of Wolcott selections. Each sit down meal includes three courses, including either an appetizer, soup, or salad, an entree, and desert at a reasonable price: $10.11 for lunch and $20.11 for dinner. Pork Loin at Bin 300“We’re actually losing money on the lunches so that we could give a good portion,” says Mona Lisa owner Sam Chowdhury. His brightly lit restaurant – the inside has the feel of a warm, airy garden while the outdoor patio allows you to take in the early summer sun – offers five options for diners to choose from. There are short ribs, pork chops, a veal-chicken combination platter, three varieties of fish on one plate, and a vegetarian option.

Most of the establishments have been offering the Taste of Wolcott promotions for three years now. This is McBride’s first year participating. “June is usually a slower month, so we decided to try it,” says owner Sharon Ritucci. “Most people think of us as a corned beef and pizza place. But we have much more than that to offer.” Indeed, she is throwing in a bottle of wine or pitcher of beer for the Couple’s special who oder from their special Taste of Wolcott menu. The rest of their menu is four courses. One unique offering is baked stuffed lasagna rolls with the eatery’s famous meatballs and sausage. Yet, they also added a new dish because of popular demand this month – Corned beef casserole with potatoes, cabbage and carrots. Top that off with four dessert options.

The opportunity to try a new place is what sparked the idea behind the Taste. Nancy Sarlo of Bin 300 brought the idea to town three years ago and coordinates advertising. Each establishment has a purple and white ‘Taste’ sign noting their location. For $20.11, the fancy tastes of chef Richie “Risotto” Morotto and his son are a particular bargain. Sarlo rotates her prix fixe menu each day for the Taste because she has a number of regulars trying the offerings. On Monday, starters included Cauliflower Soup (with a hint of curry spice), French Beans or Tomato Caprese (‘An arrangement of Heirloom Tomatoes and Fresh Mozzarella di Buffala with Reduced Balsamic and Basil Infused Olive Oil). Entrees included Porcini Rubbed Pork Loin, Richie’s famous Risotto, an Pasta Positano, and an Italian Combo which includes a grandmother’s meatball recipe.

Residents are encouraged to see what the local eateries have to offer. Bin 300 regular Peter Jarjura notes he fell in love with the romantic ambiance years ago and patrons recently raved about their delicacies. “Its like family… you feel like you’re at home here. You don’t have to travel far for great food,” he said. “We try to keep a nice family atmosphere without breaking the bank,” echoed Sarlo.

So far all restauranteurs report the month has been a success. “Its worked out real good – alot of new customers,” says Morotto.
