AAA ‘Tipsy Tow’ Program Not Offered In Connecticut

by Christopher O'Brien

By Phyllis Swebilius
New Haven Register

The following offer has been on the social media circuit for several days:

No Excuses!!! Don’t drink and drive — and don’t ride with anybody who does. Tipsy Tow offered by AAA: You don’t have to be a AAA member, from 6pm-6am on New Year’s Eve/Day they will take your drunk self and your car home for FREE. Save this number … 1-800-222-4357.

While more than a dozen AAA clubs across the country offer this program, however, “Tipsy Tow” is not available in Connecticut. The confusion, according to Fran Mayko, spokeswoman for AAA Southern New England-Connecticut, may have been brought on by the news and social media, each passing on the wrong information.

“I just think the technology is immediate now. You place something on the Internet, Facebook, (with) all the bloggers, it took on a life of its own,” Mayko said Friday.

CT Out and About

Time to reflect on the year that has passed and ring in the New Year. I am not going to do a year in review thing, as everyone and their brother has got one of them planned, and I have never been one to follow the rest of the herd anyways. Kind of because Rudolph and I never really played them reindeer games. Me? I am going to focus on all the great things 2012 is going to bring us. But first, let’s give 2011 a very cool Out and About send off!

As of now, I have listed close to 40 very cool events. Some are family friendly, and some are just going to be smokin hot parties with some of the best local bands in Connecticut. Some actually have both going on. I have listed these events on the CtOutandAbout.com events calendar, and linked each event to the appropriate website or Facebook page.

Batteries can break anyone’s budget especially if you have kids. They’re a big frustration for parents fed up with how much they spend and how often they replace the batteries.

Blockbuster is giving away free batteries in stores on Christmas Day. If there’s one left standing in your neighborhood, it may be worth stopping by to take advantage of the freebie.

Someone asked me – why Blockbuster?

Several Connecticut readers have asked me to provide more detailed information on Medicare. What better time than now when those on Medicare have their annual opportunity to change their plans until Dec. 7.

First, if you are not covered under a group health plan, either from your own or spouse’s current employment, you need to sign up for Medicare three months prior to turning 65. You can apply for Medicare online at www.socialsecurity.gov . It’s convenient, quick and easy. It takes less than 10 minutes. The site also has FAQs to assist with other issues.

And assuming that you are on Medicare, you have several important choices to make in the next few weeks.
