Republican Congressional Candidates Face Off In Debates

by Christopher O'Brien

While the public takes a break from politics to enjoy the international competition in London, the final debates for Republican candidates vying to represent Wolcott in US Congress will be held this week. An August 14th primary will narrow the field down to one nominee. Democrats will also vote the same day choosing from three candidates.

Tonight, at Brookfield High School, four Republicans will debate the issues beginning at 6:30 pm. The school is on Long Meadow Hill Rd. A second debate this week will take place in Newtown at the Edmund Town Hall on Main st. on Thursday. That debate will be at 7 pm.

Candidates participating include former Naval intelligence officer Justin Bernier, local developer Mark Greenberg, Apple Rehab owner Lisa Wilson-Foley and current State Senator Andrew Roraback.

Each candidate thus far has either already been running ads or will be starting next week. In 2010, the Republican nomination was fiercely contested with the three contendors then coming within just three percentage points of each other.

Emergency Alert Notification Changes; Cell Users Need to Re-Up

by Christopher O'Brien

The Town of Wolcott and The Wolcott Police Department have implemented the Connecticut Alert Emergency Notification System (CT Alert ENS), an emergency incident notification system. This system has taken the place of the CodeRED system that had previously been in place. This notification system will provide a town wide reverse 911 and “Opt-In” program for our citizens. This system will enhance the Police Department’s ability to protect lives and property by providing critical information to citizens during potential life threatening emergencies such as severe weather, fires, floods, unexpected road closures or evacuation of buildings or neighborhoods.

Residents with cell phones or who want to be notified by text message can sign up HERE.

NEW LONDON – Emily Audibert of Wolcott is the new Miss Connecticut.

Audibert, the former Miss Wolcott, earned a $5,000 scholarship and will represent Connecticut at Miss America in Las Vegas in January.

The 84th annual Miss Connecticut Scholarship Pageant got off to an exciting start with 20 young women advancing to the top 10 in the Outstanding Teen and Miss categories.

With a full house at the Garde Arts Center, families cheered on contestants as their names were called to take part in the finals competition for Miss Connecticut 2012 and Miss Connecticut’s Outstanding Teen 2012. “Who do you think is going to take the crown home tonight?” emcee Rachel Frank of Fox 61 asked, while a loud, inaudible response roared from the audience.
