Dear Parents and Guardians,
As you already know, a tragedy has occurred in Newtown, Connecticut at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.  This incident has shaken our core belief that students would ever be a target of such an act.  We are all in shock over this tragedy.  The State Police has confirmed that the threat at Sandy Hook Elementary School is secure and public is no longer in danger.   The Wolcott Public Schools are secure where no unauthorized personnel are allowed in our buildings.  Our students and staff are safe – there appears to be no threat to our Wolcott students at this time.  After consultation with our Chief of Police, the incident in Newtown has been contained and there is no need for a lockdown in Wolcott at this time based on our current information. As a response to the tragic events today, the Wolcott Public Schools will be practicing heightened security measures at all five schools immediately.  These measures include: 1) regular checks that exterior doors are locked and secured, 2) extra vigilance with respect to building access, 3) outdoor recess will be cancelled next week at the elementary schools, and 4) Wolcott Police Department will be on heightened surveillance and patrolling our schools during the course of the day.  We encourage you to remind students that they are safe and secure in our own community.  However, this tragedy will have affects on our children for many months.  Some advice is to answer their questions about this incident, but try to maintain their regular normal routine.
There will be no after school events, games, or competition today – December 14th.  Please keep the Sandy Hook families and Newtown community in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you.
Joseph Macary
Superintendent of Schools Town of Wolcott
