by Christopher O'Brien

By Hugh McQuaid | CT NewsJunkie

Putting an armed police officer in every school has been a common suggestion to make schools safer in the wake of the Newtown shooting. But South Windsor Police Chief Matt Reed told lawmakers Friday that school security was not the objective of the school resource officer program.

Reed, the legislative liaison for the Connecticut Police Chief’s Association, spoke at a legislative hearing held by a committee looking to make recommendations on school security to address the shooting.

Nurse Fired for Refusing Flu Shot

by Christopher O'Brien

Jacqui Coveney, a registered nurse, has worked in Hartford Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for the past eleven years. She, like many other nurses around the country, was recently terminated from her job for refusing to get a flu shot.

The original flu shot policy adopted by Hartford Hospital read that it was strongly recommended that all staff get the vaccine, but it was also an option to wear a mask while working in the hospital. Then, the flu shot became mandatory for all staff including nurses, doctors, and custodial staff. The only way to keep working at the hospital without getting a flu shot was to either have a religious opposition to the vaccine or to have a signed doctor’s note stating that there was a medical reason for not receiving the shot, such as an egg allergy (eggs comprise part of the vaccine ingredients).

Cold Weather Awaits This Week

by Christopher O'Brien

Wolcott Rd. early on Sunday Jan. 13thLast week brought unusual weather to Wolcott, as fog replaced 7 inches of snow when the weather stayed upwards of 50 degrees. The dense fog blocked out the sun for two days and kept drivers slow on the weekend of January 12-13th.

This coming week will be much more seasonal as the coldest week of the year. Nighttime temperatures will plunge into the single digits and twenties with sunshine during the day. Flurries and light snow is possible Monday evening. A heavier storm may be possible on Friday with modest accumulations of around six inches. Yet, its still early to really carve that prediction in ice quite yet.

by Christopher O'Brien

By Chris O’Brien
Hayes and Komisarjevsky | CT State Police Wolcott State Representative Rob Sampson (R-80th) has submitted a bill to reinstate Connecticut’s death penalty law during the 2013 legislative session.
“Its the proper penalty for the types of heinous crimes that unfortunately sometimes happen in our society,” Sampson tells the Whisper.

These plans used to be marketed to people with poor credit who couldn’t qualify for a phone plan, but now they’re becoming mainstream. Pre-paid plans are now being used by consumers who simply want to reduce their phone bill.
