Rental Cars: To Fill up Now or Later?

When you rent a car, you’re bombarded with questions from upgrades to insurance. I always say no to everything including the gas, but I recently thought twice about saying yes. The salesman told me the pre-pay gas price was cheaper than nearby gas stations. The price of gas seemed cheap on the sign behind the counter, but I wasn’t willing to take the risk. After all, I’ve always been told to say no to all the add-ons at the rental car counter. How did I know the gas at the counter really was cheaper?

As a consumer reporter, I have a natural skepticism toward the rental car salesman. I’ve done stories with drivers who dropped off their car flawless only to be billed later for damages they say they didn’t cause. Some companies are even requiring receipts for gas to make sure you fill up the tank close to the airport and don’t get a few extra miles out of that full tank of gas.

Larson Trip To Ireland Was About Trade

The junket U.S. Rep. John Larson took to Dublin earlier this month was bipartisan, productive, and not paid for with taxpayer dollars. Or at least that’s how he described it Monday after a tour of a defense manufacturer here in Connecticut.

The trip, including lodging, airfare, and meals for both Larson and his son, Ray, was paid for by the Ripon Society and the Franklin Center for Global Policy Exchange. According to the travel expense form filed with the House Clerk’s office, the center paid about $15,300 for Larson and his son to attend the conference and stay at the 5-star Merrion Hotel in Dublin.

Republican Candidates Host Picnic

Wolcott Republicans will be hosting a picnic at the lower pavilion at Woodtick Recreation Area on Nichols Rd. Friday evening. Anyone is welcome to attend. Proceeds will benefit the party’s campaign effort.

Republicans currently have control over both the Town Council and Boards of Education in town. The picnic will feature grilled items, soda, beer and wine. There will also be raffle prizes.

Tickets are available from any town committee member. They are $12 per person and any child under 12 is free.
