Lower County to Close for Roadwork

by Christopher O'Brien

Construction clipartSouthington will be closing down a portion of Old Mountain Road for a road construction project beginning July 6th. The town has asked Wolcott if they can assist with the detour process since so many Wolcott residents utilize Old Mountain Road on their way to I-84 and I-691 in Southington. This route connects County Road with Rt. 322 in Marion.

As a result, Wolcott will close lower County Road (near the golf course) in order to complete some road work there as well.

Mayor Tom Dunn is urging motorists to seek alternate routes- and expresses concern that the intersection of East Street and Meriden Road will get particularly congested if motorists went that way instead. The blinking light at that intersection may cause delays at the blind curve.

There are several alternate routes commuters should consider. From the North End of town, going down Rt. 69 or Willis Street can easily bring commuters to Rt. 72 or West Street in Southington.

Commuters can also use Todd Road then turn down Byam Road to pick up the highway near Blackie’s Hot Dog stand (exit 26) or down Pierpont Road at exit 25A.
