‘Teaching Moment’ Sparks Debate Over Speech

As 90 Wolcott High students prepared to make a statement against bullying on April 20th, junior Seth Groody came to school to make his own statement against what he perceives as a political agenda taking root.  “I don’t agree with gay marriage. If the school system publicly endorses that and wants to force it down my throat, then I can show that I don’t approve,” says Seth.

On the front was the familiar gay rights symbol of a rainbow – with a red slash through it. The ACLU’s Connecticut chapter accused school officials of censoring the shirt and setting a double standard. It is the second time that the ACLU has complained about civil rights violations at Wolcott High School during the 2011-2012 school year.


School officials; however say that the Groody’s and ACLU’s perception of what occurred was incorrectly reported. The Whisper reached out to school officials on Friday.

Superintendent Macary noted that the April 20th Day of Silence observance was organized by a student club called Friends of Rachel. “It was a day designated to promote tolerance, diversity and talent,” Macary tells the Whisper.
