Murphy Not Convinced On Syria

Despite a personal call from President Obama this weekend, U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy said Tuesday that he heads back to Washington skeptical of authorizing American involvement in Syria.

The two-year conflict in Syria may have reached a tipping point last month following reports that President Bashar al-Assad’s government used Sarin gas, a banned chemical weapon, outside Damascus. News reports have estimated the death toll in that attack at around 1,400 with civilians among the victims. Those casualties contribute to 100,000 deaths now attributed to the conflict.

As reports of evidence purporting to verify the use of Sarin gas by government troops have circulated around the world, President Obama and Secretary of the State John Kerry, among others, have been advocating for military intervention of some kind. Over the weekend, Obama announced he would seek Congressional authorization before pursuing a military strike.

Senator Murphy To Hold Office Hours

Newly elected US Senator Christopher Murphy’s office has announced town hall meetings around the state. The Senator formerly represented Wolcott as a Congressman and State Senator. The first meeting will take place in Litchfield this Saturday at Wamogo High School from 3:00- 4:30 pm

The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 20th at 7:00 pm in Hamden. The exact location will be announced at a later date.

Esty Finds Support in Wolcott; Greenberg Wins Town but Loses District

Wolcott residents voted in a crucial primary Tuesday that offered vastly different visions for US Congress. The conservative Republican town favored onservative Mark Greenberg on the Republican side and while newcomer Dan Roberti did well in the 2nd district at Wolcott High School, most Democratic voters favored Elizabeth Esty in the battle for the open 5th District. Wolcott was just one of 41 towns in the vast district that stretches from Meriden and Simsbury to Danbury and Salisbury.

In the US Senate race, Republican McMahon demolished Chris Shays with 91%.
