Letter: Long Term Treatment and Special Officers Could Improve Society

     In light of the horrible tragedy recently in Newtown, I believe it is time that we as a community begin to at least consider an obvious option. If we are willing to hire security guards to protect our money, gold, silver, properties and businesses, why don’t we demand that security (police) be posted in the schools to protect what we value most of all – our children. I understand that some school districts already do this periodically with Officers from their local police departments which is great. However, it is obviously insufficient. It should be regular posting for the foreseeable future.

Obama Mourns In Newtown

NEWTOWN — President Barack Obama said the reaction of the Newtown community to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting inspired a nation, but it also left us with some hard questions.“Can we honestly say we’re doing enough to keep our children, all of them, safe from harm?” Obama asked. “If we’re honest with ourselves theChristopher O'Brien

answer is, ‘no.’”

Since he’s been president, this is the fourth time he’s visited a grieving community following a mass shooting.

“We can’t tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end and to end them we must change,” Obama said, acknowledging that change won’t be easy.

The families of 15 of the 27 families who endured loss took their places at Newtown High School after meeting privately with President Obama. Other residents joined them for the interfaith service and in adjacent overflow room. Unfortunately, some town residents couldn’t make it inside as hundreds flocked the town from as far away as New Jersey, feeling the need to ‘feel close’ to the tragedy.

Candlight Vigil Monday 6 pm

Town residents and friends are invited to join Mayor Dunn and and local clergy for a candlelight vigil on Wolcott’s Town Green at 6 pm Monday evening in support of the families and friends who lost loved ones in the shooting in Sandy Hook. All residents are invited to attend.

Stories of Heroism Emerging From School Tragedy

There was the school custodian, bleary-eyed and shaking off expressions of thanks and praise, who, as shots were ringing out, reportedly ran through the school halls making sure classroom doors were locked from the inside.

And the school nurse who fought the urge to run toward the commotion to help, instead following the protocol and training she received never thinking she would have to use it. That adherence to her training likely saved her life.

Moments after taking cover under her desk per her training, she said saw the boots of the gunman as he entered her office.
