by Christopher O'Brien

By Chris O’Brien

As 90 Wolcott High students prepared to make a statement against bullying on April 20th, junior Seth Groody came to school to make his own statement against what he perceives as a political agenda taking root.  “I don’t agree with gay marriage. If the school system publicly endorses that and wants to force it down my throat, then I can show that I don’t approve,” says Seth.

Back side of a shirt worn in protest at Wolcott HighOn April 20th, Seth arrived at Wolcott High School wearing a t-shirt that read “Excessive Speech Day” and an image of man and woman holding hands. On the front was the familiar gay rights symbol of a rainbow – with a red slash through it. The ACLU’s Connecticut chapter accused school officials of censoring the shirt and setting a double standard. Superintendent Macary noted that the April 20th Day of Silence observance was organized by a student club called Friends of Rachel. “It was a day designated to promote tolerance, diversity and talent,” Macary tells the Whisper.

Students informed their parents that they were told that intruders were in the schools and they were locked in their classrooms until an announcement was made that it was only a drill. According to the Republican – American article, only Superintendant Macary and the High School principal knew about the drill beforehand. The article also says that Macary did not know about the ruse mentioned below.
